In-Office Sedation

At Bright Buds, we strive to comprehensively treat your child’s dental issues while keeping them as calm and comfortable as possible. Although our goal is to choose the most conservative treatment plan possible, we understand that some children will require sedation during dental procedures, especially complex procedures. Our in-office sedation options provide a safe and effective method of managing your child’s fears during their procedure.

As a board certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Peiravani has had extensive training and experience with pediatric sedation. After a thorough initial exam and consultation, she will work closely with your family to determine the best sedation option for your child’s situation.

Sedation Options

Laughing gas

Nitrous oxide (AKA laughing gas) is a more mild type of sedation preferred for patients with mild to moderate anxiety. It is administered through a nasal mask and inhaled, helping your child feel more relaxed during the treatment. Throughout the process, your child will remain conscious and can respond during treatment. Conveniently, the effects of the gas are felt very quickly and they wear off just as quickly after treatment, allowing your child to return back to normal activities very soon after treatment!

Oral conscious sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a safe, effective, and noninvasive method to help reduce anxiety and discomfort/pain associated with dental treatment. Much more effective than laughing gas alone, oral conscious sedation is ideal for children with moderate to severe anxiety or levels of agitation. Dr. Peiravani has extensive knowledge of various medications which be used to sedate your child and will select the appropriate medication based on your child’s age, medical history, level of anxiety, and the planned dental treatment.

Once the oral medications have been administered, it may take up to an hour for them to take effect and calm your child enough for the dental procedure to be performed. Nitrous oxide gas will be given in addition to the oral medication to achieve optimum levels of sedation and help your child feel as relaxed as possible.

General Anesthesia (GA)

In select cases, Dr. Peiravani may recommend general anesthesia for your child in order to safely and completely tend to their dental needs. General anesthesia is ideal for children with severe anxiety or agitation with dental procedures, children who need extensive treatment, or children who have special healthcare needs. Under general anesthesia, your child will be in a deep sleep and comfortable throughout the dental procedure. When they wake up, they will have no memory of the procedure. Our board certified anesthesiologist will ensure your child’s safety throughout the entire GA process.
